Thank you NPR!
A huge thank you to NPR for hosting us on All Things Considered. We had an absolute blast revisiting the road trip through our conversations with Audie Cornish.
Here’s a link to the associated article and the audio stream for those of you who missed it:

Bringin' home the bacon.
We’re 2 hours and 23 minutes from home sweet home. First stop, East 6th street, where I’ll be dropped off. Then, on to 44 Wildey Road, where Doug will finally put this vehicle to rest. I feel at once exhausted, fulfilled, and excited to be back. I was just recalling our first day of true adventure, in Smithfield, Virginia, where I spotted my first cotton field, and learned about curing...
The final countdown.
Got to Louisville, Kentucky Monday evening and pulled up to the most spectacular abode. Pfeifer family, we thank you for so generously putting us up in your beautiful home. The farmhouse overlooks a gorgeous stretch of wooden fences and farmland, just outside of Louisville. We’ve become accustomed to all sorts of accomodations along the way; you just can’t be picky when you’re on the...
We made a pit stop at one barbecue joint in Louisville and were underwhelmed but we did get to taste an item that is native to Kentucky: Burgoo. A thick stew made of all sorts of barbecue meat, vegetables, and corn. A Kentucky version of that delicious hash we tasted in South Carolina, and a brilliant way to use leftover barbecue. One thing we have noticed is that nothing goes to waste at these...
Can I get a Witness?
Highly uncharacteristic for me, but I woke up Sunday morning in Memphis and straight up wanted to go to Church. We did some pre-emptive research and landed ourselves in the best possible scenario: Reverend Al Green’s Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in a residential neighborhood of south Memphis. No, it’s not a coincidence that the Reverend’s name is Al Green. This is THE Al...

An intensely invigorating start to a windy and overcast Sunday morning in Memphis. And what better way to celebrate the post-service day than at Gus’ World Famous Fried Chicken with the rest of Memphis’ churchgoers. They weren’t kidding when they claimed that if you haven’t tried Gus’ you haven’t tried fried chicken. This stuff was ridiculous. I love fried...
So we left Memphis having only scratched the surface, but we couldn’t possibly hit it all and I have no problem returning for a Barbecue Road Trip: Part Deux. Our next stop is Louisville, Kentucky but we planned this morning such that by the time we hit Nashville at noon, we would be amped for lunch. Loveless Café, probably Nashville’s most famous breakfast, is the sole establishment we visited...
Dee's, Donuts and the Delta.
We left off the last leg of this culinary journey in Austin and have traveled through a few states since, weaving our way through both Blues and Barbecue territory. I’ll step back a few days and explain. Leaving Austin we knew we were headed for a stretch of less than spectacular barbecue states. This is not a problem. We were happy to survive on apples and peanuts for a day and not even...
